Eat More For Faster Weight Loss

by Barry J McDonald

Weight is an increasing problem with almost all families in the US, while some are trying to shed a few pounds; others are fighting with a few tens of pounds. Loosing weight is never easy; it requires determination, planning and the will power to stick to the plan, which can prove extremely difficult.

So it's understandable why the modern thinking about losing weight fast is all about starving yourself in order to lose weight. The problem with this thinking is that when you lose weight fast you slow your metabolism. When we skip meals or crash diet, our body is programmed to think it's starving and slows down our metabolism again to conserve energy.

So if starving yourself is doing the opposite of what we want shouldn't we just change our thinking and just eat more to lose more?

Here's my suggestion for "More" eating…

Before I get into the eating more food suggestions, I also suggest you should drink more. Drinking at least 6 to 8 glasses of water everyday keeps your body refreshed. Since weight loss depends on how the body eliminates body wastes, your body must stay hydrated.

Eating breakfast everyday is a big part of losing weight. Eating breakfast increases your rest metabolic rate earlier in the day, and reduces snacking before lunch. In fact, this is what successful weight losers do. Eat less and you will burn less. Eat more and you will burn much more.

Eat more foods rich in fiber as this helps keep food moving through your bowels rather than piling up inside you. Eating sufficient fiber foods, like water, also add bulk to your meals and have you feeling fuller for longer.

Eat more fresh, raw, or canned vegetables with each meal. That means eating green leafy veggies, but no dressing!

Eat more citrus fruits such as berries these foods are rich in vitamins C and E, which will help cleanse and detoxify the liver making it work more efficiently. This will allow your body to easily eliminate fat and toxins that store in the body's tissues. The idea is to release the old food and sugar addictions and give you body what it needs.

And finally eat your food "more" slowly, with each mouthful taking 30 seconds before you swallow. By eating like this you actually taste your food and this helps to stimulate the enzymes needed for digestion, so we absorb our food better. (The majority of us just throw our food without any thought.)

Eating fast without chewing food properly makes you eat more calories, because your stomach does not register how much food you actually consume. This is why you keep eating without feeling full and consuming extra calories.

Finally

Why not start preparing your own food - that way you know what you're putting into your body. So why not pack lunch for work or start cooking in advance for 3 days - example, make a huge bowl of soup on Sunday with a chicken or a bacon bone and lots of veggies and store it in the fridge. This way you've got good healthy convenience food at hand rather than a calorie laden substitute that you should avoid.

Diuretics Can Lower Blood Pressure

Subscribe in a Reader

DON'T FORGET TO COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE

by Bob Cotto

Diuretics are a medication type used in helping both women and men to lower their blood pressure. Diuretics serve other functions as well and are actually secreted by the body in some medical conditions like diabetes. Certain foods have diuretic effects, namely coffee, tea and alcohol and the body will lose more than what is actually taken in if a product includes these foods - hence the name diuretics.

Diuresis is the process when the kidneys create excess urine which results in a person urinating more and losing extra fluid. Some diuretics inhibit the kidneys from reabsorbing sodium and so more is lost through the urine. Other diuretics cause more chloride and sodium to be expelled while some block the substitution of sodium for potassium (called potassium-sparing diuretics). These types of diuretics are used by patients with heart disease and potassium is an essential electrolyte in the heart's electrical conduction.

Diuretics lowers blood pressure by removing any extra fluid that is present in the blood and so assists the heart by its having less blood to pump through the body. It is a very delicate balance to decrease the extra fluid and not cause dehydration at the same time.

A lot of patients who suffer from congestive heart failure experience difficulty in retaining extra fluid and diuretics lower blood pressure in these patients by correcting an existing problem in their systems - physicians and patients have to maintain a balance between too little and too much and patients using diuretic medications should monitor fluid balance by weighing themselves each morning. Fluid has weight and so if patients retain more fluid they will increase their weight and likewise if they are become dehydrated their weight decreases without a change in their diets. This situation signals a severe complication that a physician should address immediately.

Over the counter diuretics are not common due to the potential for abuse and subsequent dangers although there is a diuretic which is commonly used by women for fluid retention during menstruation. Some people mistakenly think that water weight loss is the same as actual body weight loss and using diuretics to achieve weight loss is extremely dangerous (it often results in the body retaining excess fluid while the medications can damage the kidneys.

Diuretics for high blood pressure problems are normally much stronger than those obtained over the counter and will be monitored by a doctor who will check how much fluid is present in a patient and how much is lost by using diuretics which decrease any negative effects on fluid retention and the kidneys.

Giving up on weight loss? Think again

Subscribe in a Reader

DON'T FORGET TO COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE

by Gary Grewal

Are you one of those who have lost hope in weight loss? You think you can't do it for nuts. You think you have tried it all and it's of no use? Think again! Most of you might have reduced weight only to gain more, or some of you might be frustrated on the slow pace of weight loss or few might simply hate the kind of diet they are following. Whatever may be the reason, weight loss is not such a horrendous or a tough task. Getting that into your head will prepare you psychologically for weight reduction. It will look a lot easier. So what is the secret of those who have successfully reduced weight?

1. Study pattern shows that they pursue aerobics. They practice an aerobic session 5-7 days a week. These people average about 45 minutes of aerobics everyday with their ranges spreading over 30-90 minutes. Aerobics helps you burn a lot of calories. It also increases your BMR- basal metabolic rate.

2. Weight training programs help you to tone your muscles. This is also another successful method followed by the successful group. They weight train for 2-3 days a week. Those who follow this are more successful at weight loss.

3. Workouts in the morning help tremendously in preparing your body for the rest of the day. You end up feeling great. Consistent morning exercises on a day to day basis puts in place your food habits. You tend to feel less hunger and hence eat the right food. This regulates your metabolic system and it works the way it should and helps you get into a healthy mind frame. Natural weight loss is the best way to reduce weight as in merges well with the body and helps in the long run. Crash diets won't help. It is better to stick on to healthy food consisting of your favorites to make it tastier. Avoid junk food.

4. People often misunderstand the concept. 20 minutes of exercise every day won't help if you are looking for serious weight loss. You have to work out vigorously to make changes. If it's your priority go ahead and do it. You will definitely feel a change in yourself soon. 20 minutes every day can't change your metabolic rate effectively, drastically reduce your weight, and make you feel great.

5. It is practically impossible to work out consistently for an hour. Make time, wake up early in the morning, make it a routine, fix your targets, and be sincere. And when you end up reducing weight, it is important to maintain it, or you will end up putting on more weight. Stick to your regime, you can probably ease out a bit but not too much. If you are looking for a serious change, then you will have to follow a serious plan. Weight loss tips can only guide, you are the only one who can make it work. So go ahead and make the difference.

Lowering Blood Pressure Naturally With Moderate Exercise And Some Simple Diet Changes

by mike legg

High blood pressure or hypertension is a condition that can affect about one in three people, this percentage rises among certain groups i.e. people who are overweight, heavy drinkers or people over forty. With more and more people becoming overweight and the stresses of a modern lifestyle it is no wonder that hypertension is becoming more common. However it is not all doom and gloom as there are ways of lowering blood pressure naturally.

High blood pressure can be treated with the proper medication and it is always advisable to seek professional medical advice, and get your blood pressure checked if you think that you may have a problem with hypertension. However lowering blood pressure naturally can easily be achieved by most people. A few simple changes in lifestyle can help reduce high blood pressure. These include a programme of moderate exercise and even a diet that contains foods that lower blood pressure.

So what are these natural remedies for high blood pressure?
First of all getting a reasonable amount of moderate exercise every day will greatly help reduce high blood pressure. In fact not getting enough exercise is often what causes high blood pressure in a lot of people in the first place. Moderate exercise means working up a slight sweat and getting slightly out of breath. Try to exercise for about thirty minutes a day, four or five times a week. Brisk walking is a great way to start.

This may take a few weeks before it starts to help reduce high blood pressure as there is no really safe way to quickly lower blood pressure, so be patient and stick with it. And the bonus is that this will not only help reduce high blood pressure, it will also help you to lose weight and feel much fitter too.

Another of the natural remedies for high blood pressure is a simple change of diet, and there are even certain foods that lower blood pressure. It is not always easy to maintain a healthy diet, the speed at which we live our lives these days usually means grabbing a quick snack or eating lots of fast foods. But a healthy diet is a really good way of lowering blood pressure naturally. And if you can find foods that lower blood pressure to include in your daily diet then so much the better.

Some of the foods that lower blood pressure include fruits and vegetables as well as fish. As long as you have no allergies then a diet rich in grains, low fat dairy and modest amounts of meat will help reduce high blood pressure over time, as will cutting down on the amount of salt in your foods. Again be patient and stick with it, and remember that there is no remedy to quickly lower blood pressure safely, it is all about taking it slowly. A steady regime of moderate exercise, a few dietary changes and eating foods that lower blood pressure will help in lowering blood pressure naturally and above all safely.

Top performing medication for losing weight

Subscribe in a Reader

DON'T FORGET TO COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE

by John Scott

In November, 2007 the British Medical Journal published a new piece of meta-research into the relative effectiveness of Orlistat, Meridia and Acomplia. The difficulty with conventional research is that each individual study usually only involves a few hundred volunteers. Although these studies have to be "statistically significant", i.e. it must be reasonable to scale up the results so that they will offer a reasonable chance of being replicated in the community at large, one study cannot be anything more than an indicator. To get the best results, you need to take a number of published clinical trials and reanalyse the data to determine whether there are trends. This is what a meta-researcher does.

In this instance, the team analysed the data from thirty clinical trials representing 19,619 participants. To be included in the reanalysis, each trial had to last at least one year, the treatment with the medication had to be in conjunction with lifestyle changes to diet and encourage physical exercise, and follow the best practice methods of being randomised, double blind and placebo-controlled. Thus, the data covers a reasonable period of time (the longer the period of time, the more people are likely to drop out of trials — in this instance, an average of about 35% of the participants dropped out), and a more significant number of people.

The participants taking Acomplia had the highest range of weight loss at 4.1kg to 5.3kg. It also reduced the levels of high density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides, improved blood pressure, and in patients with diabetes, gave better glycaemic control. But Acomplia was associated with a risk of anxiety, irritability and depression in about 6% of participants.

One of the factors that can affect the reliability of this meta-analysis process is that research journals may prefer to publish research with positive outcomes or only reports with positive outcomes are referred to journals for publication. This is called the funnel plot. Some pharmaceutical companies are accused of suppressing the publication of reports in which the outcomes are unfavourable to their products. In this instance, this did not appear to be a problem with the Acomplia findings. However, almost all thirty trials were funded by pharmaceutical companies. This may indicate the possibility of bias when the results prove positive. Secondly, the majority of the participants were relatively young and caucasian. This makes more general extrapolation of the results to other population groups more unreliable.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has recently changed its recommendation to accept Acomplia as being within National Health Service guidelines. The relevant rule for acceptance as an anti-obesity medication is that patients should consistently be able to lose at least 5% of their initial body weight after three months. That Acomplia has now satisfied this performance criterion is an endorsement of the medication's effectiveness.

Let us be clear — a 5% average may include people who failed completely and put weight on because they resisted change to their diet and refused exercise. If people cannot reduce some weight through their own efforts, giving them a pill like Acomplia is not going to help. A 5% average may therefore include some people who have lost between 10% and 20%. Given that some 35% of participants in the clinical trials lacked the motivation to continue, that means that 65% were sufficiently encouraged by the performance of their medication to continue to the end of the agreed period. Add in the significant improvement among diabetics, and Acomplia begins to look even better. However, given the risk of psychological side effects, it is perhaps always wise to take Acomplia when you are in a family environment or you have friends who can be relied on to monitor your mood.

So the moral of the research alongside NICE's change of policy is that if you are sufficiently motivated to lose weight by changing your diet and exercising more, Acomplia will significantly improve your chances of losing weight and maintaining that reduction over time.

Top Ten Reasons why We Get Hypertension

Subscribe in a Reader

DON'T FORGET TO COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE

by Christian Goodman..

While there is no exact cause of hypertension (or so the doctors say), several lifestyle factors have been found to raise blood pressure. In the tradition of making Here's my very own Top Ten Ways to Get Hypertension.

10.) Getting stressed out. Taking on much more than you can handle at work can give you a lot of unnecessary stress that sticks with you long after you leave the office. Stress has been found to cause several ailments, hypertension among them.

Take it easy and pace your work, handling the harder ones first then do the easier ones.

9.) Worrying too much. Anxiety has also been found to cause spikes in blood pressure. Some experts claim that making worrying a habit can cause as much damage as chronic hypertension.

Things that you can do to relax include meditation, yoga, and massage.

8.) Eating the wrong things. Whether or not you're overweight, and whether or not you exercise regularly, taking in a lot of the bad stuff can cause your blood pressure to rise.

Cholesterol, trans fats, and salt are the "bad stuff" that we consume. You can use the new food guide pyramid as a guideline to help you, and your blood pressure, get back on track.

7.) Lack of exercise. Most of us spend our days sitting down, whether at work, at school, or at home. Lack of exercise can lead to obesity, which is thought to be a leading cause of hypertension.

Increase physical activity by walking the last few minutes to work, go up or down using the stairs, and play a sport during the weekends.

6.) Being overweight. This is the main reason for the previous two ways to get hypertension. Poor eating and exercise habits will make your heart work harder to cope up with the excess weight.

A healthy eating and exercise regimen should gradually help you ease into your ideal weight (and blood pressure).

5.) Too much caffeine. Many people have been dependent on coffee to energize them the whole day. However, the caffeine in coffee makes our blood pressure rise temporarily, which becomes longer if we take in more caffeine in one day.

Limit coffee intake to two cups (24 oz.) a day, and you will be okay.

4.) Binge drinking. Anxiety and stress tempt many of us to escape from reality with some alcohol. Binge drinking constricts blood vessels and can cause a 10% spike in your blood pressure. Sorry, but if you suffer from hypertension, you'll need to limit yourself to a glass of wine or a can of beer a day to stay on the safe side.

Of course, we can just skip all these and just follow my suggestions in #1, but I'm getting ahead of myself. So here are the top three ways:

3.) Smoking. Each stick you consume makes your blood pressure to increase by 5-10 mm Hg. Also, the nicotine decreases the amount of oxygen in the blood, making your heart work double time to keep the body's cells healthy.

Stopping this habit will give you health benefits within minutes, instantly.

2.) Not getting enough sleep. Less than six hours of sleep per day will make you more likely to suffer from hypertension. Getting enough sleep will keep you from getting high blood pressure.

If you don't get enough rest, the heart works harder to compensate for the lower energy levels. If you snooze for less than six hours a day, see if you can take midday catnaps-these have been found to lower the risk of heart disease.

And the number one cause for hypertension?

1.) Not using my hypertension program. This is serious - I've advised my clients to follow my tips on how to avoid the first nine items, but the only thing that made them lower their blood pressure to ideal levels is when they did the simple exercises in my hypertension program.

2 Keys to Maximize Cardiovascular Workouts

Subscribe in a Reader

DON'T FORGET TO COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE

By Denise Jelinek, M.S., ACSM

To maximize the effectiveness of your cardiovascular workouts, you must monitor and vary your exercise intensity and exercise choice.

The most effective method of monitoring cardiovascular intensity is by your heart rate. However, to accurately determine at what heart rate you should be exercising requires laboratory testing or testing conducted by a Heart Zones Training® professional. In lieu of monitoring your heart rate, you may opt for a more do-it-yourself method of assessing exercise intensity: perceived exertion or simply ask yourself "how hard does this feel?"

By using the chart below, you will be able to exercise at an appropriate intensity to achieve the results you are striving toward during your cardiovascular training.

How Hard Does This Feel?

1 "Very Easy" Able to carry on conversation as if you were sitting and talking.

2 "Easy" Aware of breathing, very comfortable talking.

3 "Moderate Effort" Aware of breathing, very comfortable talking.

4 "Somewhat Hard" Very Aware of breathing, still comfortable talk.

5 "Hard" Very Aware of breathing, still comfortable talk.

6 "HARD" Can still talk, but not comfortably.

7 "Very Hard" Can still talk, but not comfortably.

8 "Very, Very Hard" Can't talk, except for short phrases.

9 "At My Limit" Can't talk, except for short phrases.

10 "Beyond My Limit" Can't talk, except for short phrases.

How Hard Should I Exercise?

To achieve all the benefits of cardiovascular training, it's important to train at all intensities, however, here are a few guidelines to achieve specific results:

To achieve health benefits (i.e. decreased blood pressure, decreased risk of heart disease and diabetes, etc.), perform the majority of your cardiovascular exercise feeling like a "1" or "2".

To attain overall fitness, divide the time you dedicate to cardiovascular exercise in the following manner:

10% Feeling like a "1" to "2"
40% feeling like a "3" to "4"
50% Feeling like a "5" to "6"

To maximize cardiovascular fitness, divide the time you dedicate to cardiovascular exercise in the following manner:

10% Feeling like a "1" to "2"
10% Feeling like a "3" to "4"
65% Feeling like a "5" to "6"
10% Feeling like a "7" to "8"
5% Feeling like a "9" to "10"

Finally, no matter what results you are striving toward, varying your choice of cardiovascular exercise mode (i.e. walking, swimming, biking, etc.), maximizes your results.

Perform at least two of the following modes of exercise per week: biking, swimming, running, walking, elliptical trainer, stair climber, step aerobics, indoor cycling, stair climbing, jump roping, inline skating, dancing, or anything that increases your heart rate and makes you breath harder for an extended period of time.

By monitoring and varying cardiovascular exercise intensity and choice of exercise mode, you can ensure that you will achieve the results you striving toward.

So what is breast augmentation? It is a procedure where the use of implants are used to enlarge the size of a woman's breasts. This cosmetic surgery procedure is also known as augmentation mammoplasty, mammoplasty enlargement, and breast enlargement.

Breast augmentation isn't just used to enhance a woman's figure however. This surgical procedure is also used after a mastectomy in order to reconstruct the breast. Breast augmentation is currently the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

So, what are breast implants made of? While silicone and saline filled implants are primarily used in breast augmentation surgeries, other alternatives have been developed recently such as soy oil and polypropylene.

The history of breast implants goes back farther than many would believe. They've actually been used since the late 1800's to improve the shape of breasts. A variety of materials have been used since then, including glass balls, ox cartilage, ground rubber, polyethylene chips, silastic rubber, and more.

There are four reasons that breast augmentation surgery is performed. For primary augmentation, primary reconstruction, revision reconstruction, and revision augmentation.

If you are considering breast augmentation, it is highly recommended that you spend a great deal of time researching the pros and cons of the various methods and materials used. natural-weight-loss-plan #2

DON'T FORGET TO COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE

by tattooed ghost

Natural weight loss means lowering your daily calorific intake while increasing the amount of calories you burn through exercise; most people choose to ignore this advice. This is not as simple as it seems though even though the concept is easy to comprehend; a third of overweight Americans and millions globally, would disagree with this advice. Of course, once you are overweight, you usually want to trim down for a whole lot of reasons, some related to health, others having to do with looks.

The strange thing is though that it is so much easier to stay trim than it is to lose weight because as soon as you start putting on weight, many things become more difficult. This is something that all of us know deep down, that if we do not watch what we eat and how much we exercise, then we are doomed to an overweight future.

Health experts say that most people who are into losing weight usually stray and tend to go back to their old eating and non-exercising habits even after they learn to enjoy low-fat eating. The simple fact is this; the longer you ignore natural weight loss programs and stay overweight, the more likely you are to have health problems.

The problem is that weight gain puts a strain on the body's ability to fight illness and many of today's health issues are primarily affecting overweight individuals. If you think about it, losing excess weight by natural methods is the most acceptable way to get rid of those extra pounds but too many people want a 'quick fix' system.

A reasonable approach to natural weight loss is to stick to a diet that is high in complex carbohydrates and fiber, moderate in protein, and low in fat. A meal such as this would be something like a baked potato (complex carbohydrate), the fiber is vegetables and protein is a lean cut of meat.

Health experts say that dietary fat promotes weight gain because it is a very dense source of calories and you store those calories as body fat easier than calories from other sources. Don't fall into the fat-free trap where manufacturers keep coming out with low-fat or fat-free versions of their best-selling foods despite the fact that Americans are getting fatter anyway.

What people fail to understand is that it isn't just fat in their food that is making them put on weight, it's the quantity of food they consume and the calorific content of it. Where this goes wrong is with overweight people who think that if it's fat free they can eat more of it instead of eating a healthy snack.

Schools of thought differ on this subject but many nutritionists agree that eating smaller meals with a snack every 3 to four hours or between meals could be beneficial providing main meals are not missed. Natural weight loss and body maintenance is a way of living, something we all did rather successfully not that long ago; it is not a craze that can be forgotten about when the next one comes along.

3 Big Muscle Building Myths Revealed

Subscribe in a Reader

DON'T FORGET TO COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE

by Julien

When it comes to the world of bodybuilding, there are plenty of myths and lies floating around. Everyone seems to have a different opinion, and so its hard to know which advice you can count on.

Here we take a look at 3 very common muscle building myths that can prevent you from gaining the muscle that you deserve. If I had a dollar for every person that believes in the following myths, I'd be very rich.

Muscle Myth 1: The "muscle pump" you get in the gym affects your muscle gains.

When working out with weights, blood pumps to your muscles and they appear fuller and more vascular. This is known as a muscle pump, and it feels good. You appear larger, stronger, and more muscular.

But the myth about muscle pumps is that they have some bearing on the muscle building process. Those who blindly believe this aim to get a bigger and better pump during their workouts, thinking that their muscles will grow because of it.

The reality is, it's nonsense. Your pump has nothing to do with getting bigger muscles, it's just a temporary side effect of training with weights. So enjoy your muscle pumps, as they make you feel good, but don't foolishly believe that it means anything to your gains.

Muscle Myth 2: Performing high reps will give you muscle definition.

Another big muscle myth is that high reps will make you look more ripped, or defined. I'm sure you've seen those guys in the gym who do endless reps of bicep curls, thinking that their arms will look ripped. Or they do heaps of crunches or situps in order to get a 6 pack.

It simply doesn't work that way. To get more muscle definition you need to lower your body fat level so that your underlying muscles will be revealed to the world. Doing cardio exercises and eating less calories than you spend will accomplish just that.

Muscle Myth 3: The more you workout, the bigger and better your gains.

This is a very common mistake beginners typically make. They go to the gym day in and day out expecting great results. But they make very small progress, or perhaps no progress at all.

Sooner or later, you will realize that you need to find the right balance between training and resting. Your muscles need a lot of rest to grow, yet a lot of people don't understand that. Overtraining your muscles can even make you lose muscle. Training only 3-4 days a week for an hour or so each session has been proven to be effective for the majority of those looking to build muscle.

Now that you are aware of these bodybuilding lies and you understand the truth, you can rest assured you won't make the same common mistakes as others.

If you want to avoid other muscle building myths that will stop you from getting the gains your deserve, check out the Building Muscle Guide. It covers everything you need to know about building a strong and muscular physique.

Sleep is an essential part of the day

DON'T FORGET TO COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE

by Pet Drugs

Did you know that a sixteen year old needs the same amount of sleep at night as a sixty year old? It is a common misconception that we need less sleep as we get older. The truth is, once we hit adolescence, our bodies set a sleep requirement that stays with us for life. For most Americans, that requirement is 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night.

Our bodies keep track of time and send out signals that tell us when we should go to sleep and when it is time to wake up. When we are children our clocks are set to send the "sleepy" signals as it gets dark out and the "wake up" messages come as it gets lighter outside.

As we pass through our teenage years into young adulthood the settings on our clocks shift so that our bodies get used to staying up later. As we pass through middle-age and beyond, our internal clocks wind back a little and our bodies try to tell us to go to sleep a little earlier.

It varies from person to person, but 7 to 9 hours of sleep is the average requirement for an adult.

Unfortunately, the average American adult only gets 6.8 hours of sleep per night. Almost 75% of Americans suffer some sort of sleeping problem. Not meeting our personal sleep needs can have a negative impact on our jobs, relationships, productivity, health, and safety.

The best way to find your personal sleep requirement is to go to sleep at a time that will allow you to get at least 9 full hours of sleep. Do not set your alarm clock. Allow yourself to wake up naturally; when your body is ready and when you are fully rested and your energy levels have been replenished.

March 5th to 11th is National Sleep Awareness Week, so start the month off right by getting the sleep your body needs. The tips below can help you get the right amount of sleep all year long:

Go to sleep at a time that will allow you to meet your personal sleep needs and still wake up in time to start your daily routine.
Allow yourself to take an afternoon nap, but don't over do it. A 20 to 30 minute "powernap" should be enough to give you a boost for the rest of the day.
Don't think that a "nightcap" is helping. Alcohol might help put you to sleep, but it also prevents you from getting any deep, restful sleep.
Listen to your body and your internal clock. If you are tired for most of the day you are not getting enough sleep at night.
If all else fails, talk to your doctor. You might be suffering from a sleep disorder.

by Dev Sri

Beautiful shining hair is akin to beauty & health. However, many people experience unjustified loss of hair loss, which negatively affects their social life and self perception. Hair loss can be attributed to several reasons including hormone changes, dandruff, exposure to chemicals, side effects of strong medications, side effects of radiation, etc. Sometimes hair loss can be the most visible aspect of some serious diseases, inadequate nutrition, or serious physical conditions.

Causes of Hair Loss

Stress & associated hormone changes
Side effects of some medicines
Ill health of liver, kidney and other internal organs
Radiation
Dandruff & other skin diseases
Incomplete nutrition – lack of proteins, minerals (like zinc) & vitamins
Exposure to chemicals
Excess use of shampoo, soap
Application of too much or too little oil

Kinds of Hair Loss

Hair loss can be classified into different kinds according to the nature of hair loss.

Alopecia areata is characterized by loss of hair in circles. This is mainly induced by stress and mental trauma. Certain physical conditions like Systematic Lupas Erythematosus (SLE) can also be a cause of this condition.

Alopecia totalis is characterized by total loss of hair from the head, leaving behind a bald head and even barren eyebrows. The skin of head turns smooth.

Diffuse alopecia condition has unhealthy, thin and short hair.

Trichotillomania is another condition, prevalent among children, characterized by the children pulling their hair and eating it. Children do this without their conscious knowledge and the hair they eat can remain in the stomach as a ball of hair, leading to pain.

Androgenetic alopecia is the most common type of hair loss found among men. This is caused by excess activity of androgen, a hormone. Women too can suffer from this problem.

Holistic Food to Prevent Hair Loss

Every nutrient that helps in normal body functioning is also required for proper hair growth. Proteins, carbohydrates, lipids (fat), minerals and vitamins play important roles in body functioning and hair growth as well. Inadequate nutrition also first reflects on the hair.

The Essential Food Items to Take to Prevent Hair Loss

Include in your diet a good mixture of everything listed below. Take a mix of everything in moderation. Curcuma longa, cumin seed, etc are good spices to prepare food. Similarly, gooseberry (Embellica officinale), dried grapes, pea (small green pea), etc also promote good physical health and hair growth.

Green and colored vegetables
Wholegrain rice and wheat
Carbohydrate rich root items – tapioca, sweet potato, etc
Egg
Milk and dairy products
Fruits – especially orange, grapes, and other slightly sour fruits

However, the quality of the atmosphere, ground, etc under which the plants grow also affect the quality of the food you take. Food crops grown with excess use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, etc have very limited quality.

Food Items to Avoid

If you care about your hair and physical health, avoid the following items.

Soft drinks
Fast food
Overly cooked food
Processed food (canned, packaged)

Agreed, these items are good for your tongue. However, what is good for your tongue may not be good for your body, blood and hair.

Hair Care Precautions

Note the following points to take good care of your hair.

Gently dry your hair with a clean towel after bathing
Always use a clean comb
Don't comb wet hair
Don't comb your hair too often
Comb your hair in the direction of its growth and not against it
Don't use shampoos that contain chemicals – better option is natural shampoos prepared from hibiscus leaves, henna, grounded small green pea, etc
Apply enough oil on hair 30 minutes before bathing – coconut oil, sesame oil, etc are enough

Be gentle on your hair. Don't rub your hair violently and use hair dryer sparingly. Shampoos that contain chemicals actively destabilize your hair. You can prepare natural herbal shampoo from materials available from your backyard itself and it is better than any shampoo that you pay big prices for.

Ayurvedic Means of Hair Care and Hair Growth Measures

Ayurveda suggests different hair oils for healthy hair growth. Amalaki (Emblica officinale) is a major component of Ayurvedic hair oils. Massage your scalp with these oils and you can see healthier hair growth.

Treatments for Hair Loss

Allopathy medicine has quite a few treatments for hair loss, which are listed below.

1. Minoxidil – this medicine prescribed for blood pressure is prescribed for hair loss too. Apply the medicine on your scalp. Effectiveness is 10-20%. Hair loss will come back once you stop using the medicine.

2. Finasteride – this medicine usually prescribed for prostrate enlargement is handy treatment against hair loss. Temporary loss of libido and lowered quality of semen are the usual side effects of using this medicine. Women shall not use this, as it can cause the women to give birth to handicapped child.

3. Hair transplantation – hair from one part of the head is transplanted to other parts of scanty hair growth. Strip incision, laser grafting, punch grafts, etc are the main types of hair transplantation treatments. The possibility of hair fall in two-three years and the scars at the areas where hair is taken are to be taken care of.

4. Scalp Reduction – a kind of plastic surgery, where skin of hairless area is removed and the skin from hairy area is stretched. The success depends on hairless area of head and the elasticity of skin.

5. Hairpiece or toupee – wigs are attached to the skin, without being noticed. Can wear and tear in the long run.

In case of hair loss, cure is almost impossible and even prevention is difficult. Put your focus on better physical and mental health than worrying about lost hair. Follow

Why you should buy adjustable dumb bells

Subscribe in a Reader

DON'T FORGET TO COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE

by Did you find this article useful? For more useful tips, hints, points to ponder and keep in mind,

Just imagine if you could replace a room full of weight machines with one piece of fitness equipment without it costing you an arm or a leg! Well adjustable dumbbells might just be the solution you have been looking for.

Adjustable dumbbells are one of the best investments you can make in your home gym. If you still need convincing, check out the following 5 reasons why you need to grab your own adjustable dumbbell set.

1. Range of exercises

One of the main advantages of dumbbells over traditional weight machines is that you can perform a number of different exercises without changing machines. You can easily change from doing bicep curls to tricep kickbacks just by changing your body position. So instead of buying 4 different machines to get a total body workout you just need one adjustable dumbbell set.

2. Price

If you look around today, you could easily spend thousands of dollars on different pieces of exercise equipment just to work different muscle groups. Surprisingly you can get a set of adjustable dumbbells for only $200-$300 depending on the weight of the set. Considering the range of exercises you can perform, this is fantastic value for money!

Compare this price to your local gym membership and you will quickly see why this is such good value.

3. Convenience of adjustability

This is what makes adjustable dumbbells so great and what differentiates them from traditional dumbbells. By using a simple quick change pin you can instantly change from one dumbbell weight to the next. Think of it like a pin loaded weight machine but with dumbbells. Because you change the dumbbell weight with a pin you don't need a room full of dumbbells which can get in the way and cost a lot of money.

4. Space

Unlike traditional dumbbells which need a dumbbell rack and lots of space to store, adjustable dumbbells sit on a stand so can be tucked away in the corner of a room. That way you can leave more space for the larger fitness equipment like ellipticals or treadmills.

If you have been putting off building your home gym because of a lack of space you now have no excuse!!

5. Maximum Muscular development

Dumbbells, also known as free weights, are the best for maximizing muscular development. Because they are less stable than machine weights, you have to use more muscles (stabilizing muscles) to help support the weight and exercise with proper form. If you have every tried performing both a traditional bench press and a dumbbell press you'll know that using dumbbells are a lot harder.

A person who can bench press 200lb x 8 reps with a traditional bar might only be able to do 160lb (80lb per hand) x 8 reps with dumbbells simple because you have to work harder to stabilize the weight.

So there you have it. What excuses do you have now? Make a smart decision and put adjustable dumbbells at top of your home gym priority list.

Can Exercise Help Arthtitis?

Subscribe in a Reader

DON'T FORGET TO COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE

by James Bartell

Its is difficult to perform certain exercises, such as walking or lifting weights, for someone with joint swelling from arthritis.

Usually when someone is diagnosed with arthritis, their doctor will provide them with a detailed treatment plan that includes various exercises as well as dietary restrictions and benefits. Red meats, dairy, processed foods, and food additives are all known to aggravate arthritis symptoms.

Yoga, tai chi, water aerobics, muscle strengthening, and weight training are the most popular arthritis exercises. Also included are range-of-motion exercises lik dance, and endurance exercises like cycling.

It's best to talk with your healthcare practitioner before starting an exercise program because it's unknown whether a certain exercise routine will aggravate your arthritis symptoms.

Nowadays, most of the major insurance companies provide their members with discounts to health clubs. Some even offer discounts on health products such as exercise videos and dietary supplements. Oftentimes policyholders are not aware of these discounts, so be certain to check with your insurance carrier to see if they offer these types of discounts.

Along with health products, many health clubs offer a 50% discount to different insurance members, and sometimes even offer private personal training sessions. Many personal trainers are well-versed in finding an ideal arthritic exercise program for their clients. Personal trainers are not normally covered by insurance, though, and must be paid by out-of-pocket expenses.

You can also check out the local YMCA or YWCA. These organizations usually offer water aerobics, wchich are gentle and great for decreasing arthritis pain. All it involves are gentle resistance exercises while sitting in a shallow pool.

Heat is very benficial to sore joints, so it should be applied to joints regardless of the type of exercise program. Heat will make joints more flexible and should be applied for 5 to 15 minutes at a time.

Before starting your routine and after you apply heat to your joints, you should perform gentle stretching exercises. Post-exercise, place cold packs on your sore joints to help reduce inflammation.

In order to make sure you stick with an exercise program, choose one that you enjoy and doesn't cause you intense pain.

Creating a Diabetic Meal Plan

Subscribe in a Reader

DON'T FORGET TO COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE

by Andrew Bicknell

The diabetic meal plan is one of the cornerstones of managing blood sugar levels that is so important for those who suffer with this disease. For this reason there are several systems that can be used for meal planning which include a consistent carbohydrate diabetes meal plan, exchange lists, point systems, food groups, and calorie counting. Each individual will have different dietary needs based on their eating habits, diet history, and special needs which must be built around the plan chosen.

Personal preferences need to be considered carefully when creating a diabetic diet plan. This is an important part of gaining compliance with the plan because one of the most difficult parts of managing diabetes is altering the foods that can be eaten along with a change in personal meal patterns. Anyone who is diabetic needs to take an active part in their meal planning with the help of a registered dietician as recommended by the American Diabetes Association.

The traditional and well known exchange list diet plan is being replaced with the consistent-carbohydrate meal plan. The idea with this plan is focusing on the carbohydrate content of the foods that are eaten with a meal. Because carbohydrates are the primary cause of raised blood sugars immediately after a meal it is important to keep the amount eaten under control. By eating a similar amount of carbs at each meal or snack that are part of the individual diet plan it is easier to manage glucose levels.

This method also helps to determine how much insulin is needed before meals; much more so then the amount of protein and fats being eaten. Counting carbohydrates allows the diabetic to calculate the proper amount of insulin needed as prescribed by their doctor.

Exchange lists work differently in that the meal plan is based on the diabetic's ideal weight, activity level, age, and occupation. Knowing these helps the diabetic calculate the amount of kilocalories they need to consume each day to maintain energy levels while controlling blood glucose levels. Once the amount of calories is calculated the amount of calories derived from proteins, fats, and carbs can then be determined. This is done using guidelines as set forth by the American Diabetes Association and the American Dietetic Association.

The exchange lists helps the diabetic plan their meals by showing them how their food choices should be distributed throughout the day. These lists give the type of food and quantity of each food type that makes up one exchange or serving in regular household cooking measurements. These portions can be substituted or exchanged for one another with little impact as to the amount of calories consumed. This makes it easy for the diabetic to control their caloric intake to match their needs.

A successful diabetic meal plan keeps blood sugar levels under control and is an important part of managing this life threatening disease and its complications.

If you are diabetic or know someone who is and you want to learn more about a diabetic meal plan please visit the website Diabetic Diet Plans by clicking here.

A Summary of Cholesterol Dietary Sources

by Wain Roy

A soft, waxy, fat-like substance in the bloodstream, cholesterol forms an essential component of cell membranes and hormones besides serving a range of other bodily functions. Presence of cholesterol is of course important for the body; but excess of it might create health problems. High cholesterol levels, also called Hypercholesterolemia, can lead to such fatal conditions as heart attack or stroke. Hence it becomes increasingly important to control cholesterol levels in the blood.

A major percentage of cholesterol is synthesized by the body itself while the rest is derived from the daily diet. Our body also produces LDL (bad cholesterol), which when excess, can clog arteries and enhance chances of heart attack and strokes. Many people also inherit high LDL levels from their parents, qualifying them as direct targets of heart attacks and strokes. Besides, eating disorders can easily call in health troubles. Intake of saturated fats, trans fats, and dietary cholesterol further increases the amount of cholesterol already present in the body.

People who inherit high cholesterol levels genetically run a greater risk heart troubles. In many cases, dietary modifications might not suffice. For those who encounter hypercholesterolemia through eating disorders, regulating their diet tops their priority list. Good cholesterol (HDL) should be balanced against bad cholesterol. Research suggests that a number of plant sterols can significantly lower LDL levels. Present as phytosterols, these plant sterols are found in little quantities in soy. Flax seed and peanut oil are also believed to reduce LDL levels.

In contrast to high cholesterol levels or Hypercholesterolemia, abnormally low cholesterol level results in Hypocholesterolemia. Studies suggest that this condition is comparatively rare and is perhaps linked with depression, cancer, and cerebral hemorrhage. Hence it becomes increasingly necessary to maintain normal cholesterol level in the blood. Some of the dietary sources of cholesterol include animal fats present in egg yolk, shrimp, beef and poultry. As mentioned earlier, plant sterols work wonders to effectively lower LDL levels. However, the cholesterol present there is in trace amounts and needs to be consumed in large quantities for satisfactory health benefit. Once your cholesterol levels are in control, you can easily ward off complicated heart issues and lead a normal healthy life.

Teeth Grinding, Jaw Clenching, and TMJ Disorders

Subscribe in a Reader

DON'T FORGET TO COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE

by Budda

TMJ refers to the tempromandibular joints, which are the joints of the jaw that connect the lower jaw bone (mandible) to the skull. These joints allow us to open and close our mouths, chew our food, and speak to one another (or ourselves). A TMJ disorder is any condition which interferes with these actions. Teeth grinding, teeth and jaw clenching, and locked jaw are some examples of conditions which relate to TMJ disorders.

TMJ disorders are sometimes difficult to diagnose, as there are many different causes for these conditions. TMJ disorders are most commonly caused by muscle tension in the jaw, perhaps due to increased stress and anxiety, jaw clenching, teeth grinding, or excessive chewing. Some other habits may be linked to TMJ disorders, such as consistently sleeping on one side of the jaw, chewing a lot of gum, or overextension of the jaw.

Other causes of TMJ disorders may be misaligned jaw joints or teeth, either due to structural problems with the jaw or teeth (such as a birth defect or scar tissue), or due to an injury to the jaw or surrounding areas. Other conditions such as arthritis may also lead to TMJ disorders.

If left untreated, these disorders can lead to headaches, earaches, joint and muscle pain (especially in the face, neck, and shoulders), loss of sleep, locked jaw, difficulty opening and closing the mouth, a clicking sound in the jaw, and/or limited movement of the head and neck.

Many people experience some of these problems and, most of the time, minor problems with the TMJ will correct themselves over time. They may reappear down the road, but the condition will not normally get any worse. However, some people suffer chronically from TMJ disorders, and must receive some type of treatment to deal with the pain and discomfort they may experience.

One of the best treatment options for teeth grinding, clenching, and other TMJ disorders are the use of dental mouth guards or splints. These custom-made guards are provided by your dentist and are used to relieve tension on the jaw during sleep. They help prevent teeth grinding and, if used regularly, can help curtail these nocturnal habits. Two common types of these guards are full upper mouth guards, which fit over all of the upper teeth, or NTIs, which are worn around only the top front teeth and have a high success rate stopping clenching.

Other methods to help treat TMJ disorders are available, and the best method really depends on the exact cause/s of the disorder. If high stress or anxiety levels are to blame, then stress management techniques may be the best line of defense. If the problem is due to structural problems with the teeth or jaw, then dental adjustments may bring these problems to an end. No matter what the cause, applying soothing heat to the area is often helpful, as well. Consult your dentist to find out what steps can be taken to help treat any TMJ disorders you may be suffering from.

Introduction to Acupuncture

Acupuncture forms part of traditional Chinese medicine. It has been claimed that it is one of the oldest forms of healing throughout the world. Underneath acupuncture is the belief that a disruption in the flow of imbalances and qi within the forces of both yin and yang cause diseases to occur. A combination of herbs, massage, meditation and acupuncture are believed to restore the balance of yin-hang and the flow of qi and this helps the healing process. Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific points of the body, which removes blockages in the flow of qi and therefore restores and maintains one's health. In the United States, acupuncture is known to be an area of alternative medicine, and is not widely accepted as part of conventional medicine.

Although acupuncture is not accepted as being a traditional medicine, there are some points that we need to consider about it:

Chinese and other Asian people have used acupuncture for thousands of years.

The effectiveness of acupuncture for treating many conditions is currently being studied by scientists.

Few complications arise as a result of acupuncture, although there can be serious side effects if it is not performed by a person who is suitably qualified.

Although the procedure has existed in China and other Asian countries for several years, it has only been used in the United States since 1971. Since acupuncture was introduced, many people have chosen to use it for many conditions, including chronic pain, arthritis, post-surgical pain and migraines. Many people squirm at the thought of needles being injected into them, but most swear by the benefits received by using acupuncture. Many people choose to try acupuncture after all traditional medical procedures have failed to help their condition.

There is no need to fear acupuncture as long as you visit a practitioner that is suitably qualified. Complications are usually only caused when a practitioner does not follow proper safety procedures or they are not fully qualified. In the United States, the FDA regulates the use of the needles, and can also include a requirement for one time use. I would not visit a medical doctor who was not qualified to care for me, and everyone should take the same precaution when choosing their acupuncture practitioner.

Understand the procedure and be careful about choosing a qualified practitioner, and you will gain a better result from acupuncture and will be able to make a decision about the benefits you may obtain. One should never choose a practitioner until you have first conducted your own research.

Uses of green tea are still being explored by medical science in research that may take many years; this wonder herb contains ingredients which are still being researched but it is most famous for it's antioxidant properties. Green tea weight loss products are readily available in many forms and considered by many as one of the best products to take to shed excess calories.

The affect on the human metabolism is quite amazing as it actually slows down the process of aging if used over a long period by aiding cell regeneration. Although it is the toxin removal and laxative qualities that help with weight loss when taken regularly. The way to stop fat from forming is by burning calories faster than they can be put on as excess weight, and this is where the product excels.

Despite the success of green tea weight loss products, they cannot work on their own so the user must be responsible for what food they eat and any exercise they perform. It is important to remember that weight loss also requires a person to completely change their eating habits otherwise just consuming the product will be a waste of time.

If you use green tea as a drink then the best time to take this is just before you retire for the night. There is generally an acclimatization period of a couple of days when using this product, during which time the user may feel some stomach and bowel discomfort but it shouldn't take too long before this vanishes. This effect is quite normal especially for new users and is down to the way that green tea weight loss supplements speed up the metabolism so calories do not have time to become fat tissue. Results are normally obvious within the first week, particularly if you complete the diet with physical exercise, lots of liquids and green food.

The attributes of green tea can be further enhanced when it is used in combination with extracts from the root of ginseng. Used in Asia for thousands of years ginseng is well known and respected there and provides essential vitamins and minerals for good health when combined with those already found in the product.

Increasing the energy and vitality level of the user, ginseng is a valuable addition to green tea products especially for people trying to get back to what should be their normal weight. Green tea and ginseng have not been found to have any harmful side-effects even during periods of up to six months at a time.
