You can do yoga without a yoga mat but let's face it, who wants to? It is so much more comfortable and enjoyable performing yoga on a mat. A yoga mat is the first accessory that most people practising yoga will purchase as it is the basic requirement for yoga. What Do You Know About the B Vitamins?

The B vitamins have common dietetic sources such as whole grains, legumes, eggs, dairy products, meat, meat organs, fish and yeast. They are soluble in water and are quickly assimilated by our body. Since they are also eliminated through the urine, we have to ingest them in a daily basis through our diet.

These vitamins perform many functions in our body; they are in charge of carrying out physical and chemical processes that keep us alive and healthy. Within this group we find:


B1 – Thiamin
Its function is fundamental for proper digestion of food, and to process carbohydrate. We find it in meat, egg yolk, yeast, legumes (dry beans, lentils and garbanzos) and whole grains.

Lack of this vitamin produces lesions in the nervous system which depends in part on the absorption of carbohydrate; it can contribute to cardiovascular disease and may cause gastrointestinal lesions.

Alcohol impairs thiamin absorption and enhances thiamin excretion in the urine. An estimated four out of five alcoholics are thiamin deficient. Prolonged thiamin deficiency can result in the disease beriberi, which was first observed in East Asia when the custom of polishing rice became widespread. Rice provided 80% of the energy intake for the people of that area and rice germ and bran were their principal source of thiamin.


B2 – Riboflavin
This vitamin is part of the energy metabolism as well as of the formation of certain enzymes that prevent inflammation in the mouth, tongue, skin, eyes and gastrointestinal tract. Thus, B2 is essential in the metabolism of cells and the maintenance of a healthy skin, mucous membranes and eyes. We can find it in meat, dairy products, whole grains and dark green vegetables.


B3 – Niacin
Known as been the vitamin administered in cases of intoxication such as the one produced by alcohol, this vitamin has also a very important role in the nervous system and digestive tract functions. It is also part of the production of sexual hormones and in maintaining a healthy skin.

B3 is found in meat, meat organs, poultry, fish, yeast, legumes, dairy products, eggs and whole grains. A serious lack of this vitamin causes significant damage in our tissues. Pellagra is the characteristic disease caused by a lack of B3.


B5 – Pantothenic Acid
This vitamin has a main role in the absorption of carbohydrate, protein, and lipids (fats). It participates in the synthesis of iron and in the formation of insulin. A deficiency of this vitamin causes headaches, vomiting, cramps and tingling in arms and legs. This circumstance however is unusual because this vitamin is found in all vegetable and animal tissues.


B6 – Pyridoxine
Vitamin B6 is part of the metabolism of protein and amino acids, the production of hemoglobin which is in charge of transporting oxygen to our cells as well as the equilibrium of sodium and potassium.

It is found in all foods already mentioned as a general source of the B vitamins. Lack of B6 can cause, among other things, dermatitis, slow growth in children, fatty liver, anemia, insomnia, fatigue, depression, irritability, apathy.


B9 – Folic Acid
Folic acid is of the utmost importance in cell division (growing) and the formation of red cells. Its role is extremely important because it participates in the synthesis of our DNA components which are fundamental for cells to form so as to enable our body to develop and live.

It is found mainly in dark green vegetables, liver, legumes, seeds, and whole grains. Lack of this vitamin can cause a kind of anemia that when it happens in children, it can lower their resistance to illnesses and cause difficulties in their growing.

Several research studies have confirmed the importance of folic acid in reducing the risks or neural tube defects. The brain and spinal cord develop from the neural tube, and defects in its orderly formation during the early weeks of pregnancy may result in various central nervous system disorders and death.


B12 – Cobalamin
As well as folic acid, B12 has as its main functions the formation and maturation or red blood cells. It also participates in the maintenance and proper functioning of the nervous system cells. This vitamin is necessary to maintain the energy reserve in our muscles.

B12 is only found in animal products – meat, poultry, fish, shellfish, eggs, dairy products and fortified cereals. Lack of this vitamin causes pernicious anemia (problems with the formation of red blood cells) and the loss of myelin in the nervous cells. A deficiency of B12 can cause mental disorders.

Conclusion
For what we have seen here we may conclude that each of these vitamins performs different tasks and that their many actions can be considered individually. Not quite true. Many times it is difficult to tell which vitamin is performing which function because the presence or absence of one affects another's absorption, metabolism and excretion. In fact, these vitamins depend on each other to function optimally; a deficiency of any of them creates multiple problems. Fortunately, a variety of foods from each of the food groups will provide an adequate supply of all the B vitamins.

Will Brink's "Body Building Revealed" is in my opinion the the most complete, comprehensive and easy to understand information published to date on "how to achieve lean muscle gains". (It has even been described by bodybuilding legend Lee Labrada as a "must read").

The author, Will Brink, is a genuine sports nutrition and supplementation expert, with all the credentials to prove it - not just another of the many "self acclaimed experts" that seem to appear everywhere on the Internet these days. Keep in mind; most of these drugs have major annoying side effects that can be potentially dangerous if dosages are not effectively monitored.

Surgery is generally the treatment for Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension. Pulmonary Thromboendarterectomy is the surgical procedure that is very effective for treating this form of the disease. This is why it is so important that it is diagnosed accurately and in a timely manner.

Pulmonary Hypertension treatment is extremely important as there is no cure. The rare arterial disease is complex and requires much attention. If gone untreated or mismanaged, the disease leads to right ventricular failure. A final note: the disease has no racial connection and it is often prevalent in persons 20 to 40 years of age.

I am not sure about you but I am a person who has struggled to control my weight for the majority of my adult life. I have to admit that I am a lover of goods food and regularly enjoy dining out. A couple of years ago I realised that the time had come when I needed to lose some weight. I tried many a diet with a distinct lack of success. Eventually I did manage to reach my target weight and in this article I will be writing about the ways in which I achieved this.

For a few months I had been having a fair amount of success by what is often referred to as a calorie controlled diet. This form of weight loss plan requires a lot of discipline and my main problem was the fact that to every three good days I would also have one really bad day where I would basically eat and drink far too much. Yes I was fully aware that this would ruin my chances of overall success and started to look for a new method.

Now I have to say that I am not exactly one for exercise. I have never enjoyed going to the gym as it makes me feel very paranoid as the people at these gyms seem to look so fit.

Swimming and running have never really floated my boat but at the same time I knew that I would have to start some form of exercise. One day I was reading a few articles on the subject of successful weight loss plans and was fortunate to read about the benefits of walking.

I thought to myself, I can do that, I like walking. The next day I went on three long walks, I was not walking particularly quickly and actually enjoyed the experience, it was quite therapeutic in fact.

I continued to walk in this way for a period of around four months and also continued to attempt to count those calories. This was the recipe for my success in helping myself to attain my target weight and I hope it will also prove to be of use to other people.

Being in great shape is something that is grossly underestimated in today's society and certainly something that can have a massive impact on your overall quality of life. Unfortunately, many of us get busy with work and day to day activities that we don't make regular exercise a priority.

There are many ways to get fit, including walking, jogging and playing sports. However, the best way to build a great physique and get into world class shape is with an exercise plan.

Now, when most people hear "weight lifting" and "cardio" they immediately think of an expensive gym membership. Not only are gyms expensive, they're also time consuming (driving to and from the gym to workout) and can be really intimidating to someone who is just starting out and may be insecure about their body.

A great alternative to going to the gym is following a home fitness program. There are programs and systems available which can whip you into shape without ever having to leave the house. These programs are extremely easy to follow and many of them are available in video format.

Working out out at home can be a fantastic way to get into shape and is excellent if you prefer a more private setting, however it's not without downsides. The biggest problem with home exercise and fitness programs is motivation -- you have to keep yourself motivated and learn to block out all of the distractions that may pop up during your workout time.

If your goal is to improve your health this year and you've decided that the time to make a lifestyle change is now, I encourage you to consider a home fitness plan. As long as you can maintain the desire and motivation to exercise each day, you'll find that working out at home is convenient and extremely effective with the right program.

Hoodia is by now a well-established name in the weight-loss industry, and most people will know that these products come from a natural plant called hoodia.The Hoodia plant looks like a cactus, but is in fact a succulent, and has many varieties, but it is the Hoodia Gordonii alone which possesses the magic P57 molecule.

The plant is native to South Africa, particularly the desert regions of the Kalahari. The indigenous tribes were aware of the natural ability of this plant to reduce normal appetite. This was very useful to these tribesmen, who would often have to undertake hunting trips that could last for many days, until they found the game they were after. They would more often than not set off carrying no food, and so would chew on the plant to stave off their natural hunger pangs.

Although this practice of the Kalahari tribespeople was recorded by a Dutch anthropologist in the 1930s, it is only recently that the pharmaceutical companies started to take an intense interest in this appetite-suppressing plant.

They eventually concluded that anyone ingesting the P57 molecule would see a reduction by up to 2000 calories in the amount of food demanded by the body's natural appetite. Somehow, this new molecule could produce the normal feelings of satiety on a much lower intake of food.

So, as non-scientists, we must accept that the case is proven. Hoodia Gordonii does indeed suppress the appetite, and, for most of us, if our appetite is reduced then we are far less likely to over-eat. If you take hoodia, you MUST continue to eat a healthy diet, drink plenty of liquids, and take regular exercise, and then you will lose weight and remain healthy.

The trouble is, once word got out about this wonderful and effective weight loss product, there was a huge demand, and this led to many unscrupulous parties getting involved in this booming market. Even today, the Internet can provide hundreds of sites offering different hoodia products.

It is often very difficult for the consumer to distinguish the genuine from the downright fraudulent product. In many cases, the product was based on a hoodia plant, but not on the Hoodia Gordonii, the only one with the magic active ingredient, so it would not suppress the appetite.

In other cases, many chemicals were added to the hoodia extract to produce a unique product, but these were not as effective, and could produce side effects. Remember that the hoodia plant is 100% natural, and so does not have any nasty side effects.

The old maxim of "Buyer Beware" applies here as in so many instances. You should only ever purchase a product based on 100% pure hodia gordonii, and anyone purporting to offer pure hoodia gordonii should carry appropriate certification. If the requisite certification is not available, you should look elsewhere.
