The Secrets of What Could Cause High Blood Pressure

by Michael Blair

High blood pressure (aka hypertension) is that often there are now symptoms. All too often the only symptom is having a heart attack, that's why a common nickname is the "silent killer".

Knowing what could cause high blood pressure and taking the steps to reduce the risks is one of the best ways to treating hypertension.

A big one is salt. It's in most everything you eat or drink so you need to carefully read the labels of the cans and boxes your food comes in. If you cook and eat mostly fresh food you have less to worry about, just do your best not to add to much as you cook.

Being overweight, not just a pound or two, but 15% - 20% or more. Being overweight leads to many health problems including high blood pressure, diabetes, problems with your joints (all that extra stress on the body), and more.

Drinking alcohol, in anything more than moderation, besides other health problems, can play a part in raising your blood pressure. More and more reports are telling us that drinking one glass of wine actually is beneficial in lowering your blood pressure, the "key" to those studies are "one glass", more than that does not help, in fact it hurts you.

Most everyone knows it, but the "pill" also increases the risk that you will have high blood pressure. Women who take the "pill" should be regularly, once or twice each year, having their blood pressure tested.

While less common, different illnesses or health conditions (even pregnancy), medications, and street drugs.

Having your blood pressure checked, at least annually, is certainly recommended. Especially if you have a family history of high blood pressure, have other health issues or have a lifestyle that may raise your risk of high blood pressure.
